At Duloe, each class teaches Religious
Education once a week.
We use the Understanding Christianity scheme of work to support teachers in teaching about
Christianity and their additional planning relating to other world religions.
Understanding Christianity is based on the eight core concepts that are at the heart of Christianity. These concepts tell the 'big story' of the Bible.
Within each unit, three elements are woven together: 'Make sense of the text', 'Understand the Impact' and 'Make Connections'. Teachers select the activities that are needed to enable children to achieve the outcomes.
Our approach means these key concepts are revisited through the different key stages within the school. This is called a spiral curriculum.
The eight core concepts to tell the 'big story' have been made into an artisitic representation. The children use this illustration to make links between the different units that are covered. This is called the 'Big Frieze.'
We develop our children's knowledge of the Big Frieze both through Collective Worship and our RE lessons.
We teach Religious Education through a three year rolling program. This is due to the mixed age-ranges we have in our classes.
This rolling program can be seen in the 'Documents' section below.
Class 1 visited the synagogue in Plymouth with Trenode Academy to learn all about Judaism.
The children had an amazing day learning about Jewish traditions and customs.
They had the opportunity to dress-up in traditional clothes and learn about symbolism within Judaism.
In Collective Worship we have been looking at each panel of the big frieze in mixed-aged groups.
The children have been looking at the details within each panel and learning about what they represent.
As we look at each panel, our display in the school hall will develop so we see how all the panels joins together to tell the Christian story.

Class 3 have been learning about Islam this half-term. Today the children selected one of the commandments
from Surah 17. They acted out a scene in which a Muslim might find it difficult
to keep the commandment. They freeze-framed the action at the critical point.
One member of the group narrated what the person was thinking and highlighted the
decision-making process. Then they continued with the action so the audience
could see what the person decided to do.

Class 3 have been investigating the question: What is it like to be a Muslim in Britain today? We looked at British Muslims taking part in their pilgrimage to Mecca. This is known as Hajj and is one of the 5 pillars of Islam. During the ritual, Muslim pilgrims throw pebbles at three walls (formerly pillars) to warn off the devil. Class 3 reinacted this event (using tennis balls rather than pebbles).
