Another productive week for Class 3. We continued to explore the RE question, 'Why is the Torah so important to Jewish people?' and enjoyed writing in Hebrew. Creativity shone through as we introduced our mechanical toy making project. Year 5 and 6 took part in First Aid training, role-playing emergency scenarios and exploring every day hazards and how to avoid them. Finally, we topped the week off with sunshine-filled games of basketball and rounders during PE.
Class 2 have been exploring fractions this week so on Friday we headed outside to do our learning in the sunshine! Mrs Dunn's group concentrated on finding halves, whilst Mrs Hughes' group worked on non- unit fractions such as 2/3 of 21. It made fractions much more fun!
For World
Maths Day, the children used their ratio skills to create cocktails for
celebrating Vikings. We had a lot of fun and made a lot of mess!
10 amazing children from Duloe sang at the Plymouth Pavilions on the 16th March alongside 140 other Cornish school children. Songs included Hope, Try Everything and Don't Stop Me Now which reflected their exuberant energy.
A verse written by our children was also performed as part of the performance. It was a fantastic feeling to be part of this live performance after 3 years of being unable to do it in this way. The audience loved it and what a great way to showcase the singing talent we have here at Duloe!
A special thank you to Mrs Dunn for preparing the children so well and to the families that encouraged their children to go for it and have fun! We are incredibly proud of you!
This week we have been getting arty! We looked at the artwork of Eric Carle and how he used painted paper to create textures in his collages. We created our own paper bank by painting the paper in lots of different ways. We planned our own Mr Man, trying to use simple shapes. Then we used our paper bank to collage our Mr Men.
Each week in maths, Class 3 have been looking at how they can use their mathematical knowledge in real world contexts. Over the last couple of weeks, the children have budgeted for a meal at Gourmet Burger Kitchen and learnt about the finances related to buying a house. The children found their dream home and used their percentage skills to calculate their deposit, how much their mortgage would be and what their interest repayments would be each year.
For World Book Day we welcomed parents and carers into school at the start of the day to share a story with their childrn. Our wonderful PTFA provided refreshments and it was lovely having a more normal school event once again.
The children (and staff) looked amazing in their costumes and we had a great day reading and writing stories.
Today, the whole school took part in the virtual Songfest performance which has been organised by the Cornwall Music Service.
Mrs Dunn has been working with the children to learning a collection of new songs. 10 children from the school will also be taking part in a live concert at Plymouth Pavilions in a few weeks time.
Today we held our Ash Wednesday service at St Cuby's church.
Ash Wednesday follows Shrove Tuesday. People used to go to
church on Shrove Tuesday to be ‘shriven’. This is an old word that means that
everyone had to confess all the things that they knew they had done wrong. The
priest then blessed them, they went home, and made pancakes to use up the eggs
in the house, ready for… Ash Wednesday.
Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent - six weeks
of preparing for Easter. Lent is a fast - a time of eating less well, and
praying more. It's also a time of thinking about all the things that human
beings get wrong.
It is called Ash Wednesday as people are 'ashed'.
The palm crosses from the previous Palm Sunday are burnt and the ash is made
into a paste. The paste is then used to draw the symbol of a cross on the
person’s forehead.
The children also helped our church warden, Penny Geech, to change the liturgical cloth on the alter from green to purple to mark the start of Lent.
Our service was finished by Kiera who read a prayer based upon Ash Wednesday.
Thank you to all of the parents, grandparents and carers who were able to attend the service. We really appreciate you being part of our worship.
We played lots of games with them and had lots of fun.
The children presented gifts that they had made along with many presents from the staff and PTFA.
We will miss them both very much. Have a look at the videos (they are rather funny).
