What a fantastic and busy first half of the summer term we have had in our classroom! The children have worked incredibly hard across all areas of the curriculum and should be very proud of everything they have achieved.
In English, we completed our unit on characterising speech, where we explored how authors use dialogue to reveal information about characters and move stories forward. The children developed their understanding of how speech can help readers learn more about a character's personality, feelings and motivations. We have now begun an exciting new unit based on Robin Hood. Over the coming weeks, the children will be planning and writing their own "through the portal" stories. This will be a wonderful opportunity for them to demonstrate their independence and apply all of the writing skills they have developed throughout the year.
In Maths, we have been focusing on fractions. The children have learned how to identify and create equivalent fractions and have practiced comparing and ordering fractions with increasing confidence. They have shown excellent perseverance when tackling challenging problems and explaining their mathematical thinking.
Our Science lessons have centered on plants. We investigated the conditions plants need to grow and thrive, exploring how water, sunlight, nutrients and space all play an important role. The children enjoyed learning about the different parts of plants and how each part helps the plant survive and flourish.
In History, we travelled back in time to discover the fascinating world of the Ancient Egyptians. We explored the key features of their civilisation, including their beliefs, achievements, daily life and famous pharaohs. The children were particularly interested in learning about pyramids, mummification and the importance of the River Nile.
In PSHE, we discussed different roles and responsibilities within our communities. We reflected on the people who help us every day and considered how their work supports and benefits others. These conversations encouraged thoughtful discussions about gratitude, respect and responsibility.
PE lessons have focused on cricket, where the children have been developing their striking and fielding skills. They have enjoyed learning new techniques, working as a team and improving their coordination and game awareness.
Finally, in Art, we created beautiful Egyptian-inspired scrolls for our art exhibition. The children carefully layered paper to make their own papyrus before painting detailed Egyptian-style designs. The finished pieces looked fantastic and showcased both their creativity and craftsmanship.
Phew! What a busy and successful half term it has been. We are looking forward to all the exciting learning still to come this summer!

A Warm Welcome Back to Year 3!
We hope everyone had a wonderful and sunny half-term break.
We have dived straight back into learning and have been busy practicing for the Polperro Festival. The children are doing an amazing job, and we are incredibly proud of their enthusiasm and dedication. A huge thank you for all the props that have been brought in-they are helping to bring our performance to life. The children have been working really hard on learning their lines and projecting their voices confidently for the audience.
We will continue rehearsing during our English lessons over the coming weeks as we prepare for the festival. We are looking forward to sharing all of the children's hard work with you soon!
This term, we have launched our new enquiry question: "What's on Our Doorstep?"
To begin our learning journey, we discussed places we have visited and what we already know about the history of Cornwall. The children shared some fantastic ideas and experiences, leading to some thoughtful discussions about our local area. We also talked about what we would like to find out during this topic. The children came up with some wonderful questions, including learning more about Cornwall's population and how farming has changed over the years. We are excited to explore these ideas further and discover more about the history, geography, and communities that make Cornwall such a special place.
This week in Computing, we started our new topic, Data Handling. We explored the concepts of records, fields, and data through a fun activity based on a game similar to Top Trumps, using monster cards. The children examined the different fields on each card, including speed, strength, appetite, and intelligence. They compared the data in each field and discussed how information can be organised and used to make comparisons. It was a fantastic introduction to data handling, and the children enjoyed developing their understanding through this engaging and interactive activity.
A huge congratulations Esme for being awarded Pupil of the Week! Esme has really shown determination in maths this week, she was finding a concept particularly tricky but I was impressed with the way she didn't give up and persevered, well done Esme!
A big congratulations to Evie for achieving your 99 club badge this week - a fantastic effort. Well done everyone!

Some of this week's learning
We have had a lovely first week back, beginning the last
half term of this academic year!
I English this week we have started to explore a new story
The Rainbow Fish! The children have really enjoyed learning this story using
role play, a story map and by using their oracy skills to sequence the story. We
have also made our own rainbow fish using lots of creativity.
In maths this week we have been concentrating on shape! We
have continued to sing our 2d and 3d shape songs, which we LOVE in Foundation.
The children have been learning to use shapes for purpose and exploring how to
rotate shapes!
Our BIG question this half term is: Where would I bury my
treasure?
So, this week the children have been designing flags to go
on a ship, making underwater pirate pictures, selling ice cream in our role
play area, and exploding shells. In PSHE the children have started their 'changing
units of work and this week we drew around one of the children and labelled
parts of our bodies!
We have completed lots of other activities too!
We wish you a wonderful INSET day tomorrow and weekend

During this month the children continued to study 'Rivers' in their Geography unit. They learnt all about the different uses of rivers and their importance before answering their focus question, "What are rivers and what are they used for?"
In Maths, the children continued to work hard on their times tables before completing the MTC test. They also completed the White Rose money unit.
In Science the children have continued learning about 'Changing States'. They looked at reversible and irreversible changes and melting and boiling points of different materials. They then planned and carried out an experiment investigating the melting points of different foods.
Art this month involved the children continuing their learning about paint, composition and proportion. We had a focus on landscapes and linked our work to that of Georgia O'Keefee's art work. They carried out lots of sketching and practiced mixing paints to create different tints and shades before sketching and painting a local landscape in the style of Georgia O'Keefee. Their art work was then displayed in our school's art exhibition.
In computing the children learnt about using Scratch to develop their knowledge and understanding of programming. They investigated some of the different projects already on Scratch before developing their own coding to make a multiplication game. They learnt about variables and different statements to help them ensure their project worked how they wanted it to.

For our
final couple of weeks in pre-school, we explored the exciting world of
minibeasts!
We have
learnt lots of interesting facts about how many legs the insect may have, whether
they have wings or not, and what colours or patterns may be on them.
We painted water-colour
minibeasts and enjoyed our minibeast garden tuff tray as part of our explore
and learn time.
It's been a
fun half term learning all about what we can find in a garden, and how we plant
seeds and care for them.
The
children's young sunflower seedlings have started to be sent home, we would
love some photos later in the summer if they flourish into successful
sunflowers!
This year pre-school
will be entering an art competition at Liskeard show. Inspired by our recent learning the children
have started their 'Spring Time Garden' art to enter into the competition.
After half
term we will be moving on to a new enquiry question, 'How do I stay healthy?'
We will be
looking at healthy foods, hygiene and exercise. Perfect timing as we will be
practicing for Sports Day when we return too.
More
details about Sports Day and other key dates will be available shortly after we
return.
On Thursday
the children in pre-school got a treat from Miss Edwards when they were able to
toast marshmallows over the campfire.
All the children listened well to the instructions to safely hold their
marshmallows, and then gave 10 blows to cool them down before eating! Yummy!
We hope
everyone has a lovely half-term week and enjoys the planned sunny weather.
We will see
you when we return on Monday 1st June.
The
Pre-School Team.

This week, we have finished our Space Hotel leaflets. I am extremely proud of their writing and love the time and effort they put into the presentation.
In geography, we have collated our data from the fieldwork to create a map or Fore Street, tally chart of the types of shops and and overview of the results from the questionnaire. The children then worked in groups to create and present the findings to the class.
In computing, we found out about Infrared devices and we designed our own creations that could be used in school. Some people thought of machines that use heat to detect germs; others created laser machines to protect the school IPads.
Today, we bent the rules by wearing mufti, painting our nails and doing colouring in when we should have been doing maths!
Have a great half term everyone.

What a fantastic week we have had in Tregantle Class!
This week, we have been learning the story *The Enormous Turnip*. We have really enjoyed bringing the story to life by making up actions to retell it, learning songs about the story and even making our very own turnip soup. It was delicious, and we were very proud to try something new!
On Wednesday, we welcomed our parents and carers into school for a 'Mastering Number' session. Everyone had lots of fun playing number games together and sharing our maths learning. Thank you to everyone who attended and supported the children.
Friday was our exciting 'Bend the Rules Day'! We had great fun wearing non-school uniform and especially enjoyed playing football during maths time!
We hope you all have a wonderful half-term break and we look forward to seeing everyone refreshed and ready for the second half of the summer term.

Summer 1
Spelling
We've been busy investigating spelling patterns; identifying these within our reading books and books for pleasure. We discussed the importance of recognising digraphs and trigraphs when decoding new words we come across in our reading.
Reading Fluency
Year 3/4A have improved their reading fluency this Half Term, accessing regular texts. Within the sessions we partner up and listen carefully for the following reading skills:
pace, volume, articulation, use of punctuation, emphasis of key words and the application of our phoneme knowledge in decoding 'trickier' words.
We then offer 'constructive feedback' in a 'feedback sandwich' in ways to move our reading forward. We love these sessions!
Maths
We are currently at the end of the 'Decimals' unit having applied our knowledge of Place Value and Fractions.
English
Our knights in shining armour have been busy on their quests to save princesses and slay fictional beasts! We've created and innovated our own knightly tales based on a shared WAGOLL. Year 3/4A have reinforced their understanding of the use of DADWAVERS, expanded noun phrases and dialogue within their writing, editing and up-leveling throughout the planning stages. Please pop in and have a read. They'll be making their way home as books complete with title page and blurb tomorrow for you to enjoy too!
A great half term of learning - Well done Year 3/4A!

The children have been learning about Greek cuisine this week, finding out that olive oil, wheat and wine are food staples in Greece.
The week started with the children putting their taste buds to the test with a Greek taster session including: tzatziki, kalamata olives, pitta, feta, humous, sun dried tomatoes and dalmades (vine leaves). We were very impressed with how the children challenged themselves and tried thing that were new to them.
They then used cucumbers )a key ingredient in Greek salads) to practise using graters and peelers as well as different knife skills.
After considering which ingredients they had enjoyed tasting and would like to try again, the children designed stuffed Greek flat breads and a Greek salad.
They worked hard across the day today to prepare a Greek-inspired picnic. Using the skills learnt earlier in the week, they chopped ingredients for their Greek salads; measured, mixed and kneaded their ingredients for the dough; and stuffed their flat breads ready for baking.
This afternoon, both classes came together to sample their products-it is safe to say that the flat breads were a huge success!
Creative
We are bold and innovative in our approach to find new solutions to the challenges we face.
Curious
We are inspired by the awe and wonder of the world.
Responsible
We take responsibility for our actions in an environment of mutual respect.
Enthusiastic
We are passionate about learning.
Excellent
We are the best we can be.
Determined
We overcome all barriers to reach our potential, developing a capacity to improve further.
